ROYAL MARINES EXPERIENCE: REMEMBRANCE ROOM
For over three and a half centuries the Royal Marines have been at the forefront of Britain's defence, earning their reputation as one of the world's most versatile and respected military forces. Now, their remarkable story finds a new home at the Royal Marines Experience in Portsmouth Historic Dockyard.
A key feature of the Royal Marines Experience will be the Remembrance Room. The Remembrance Room aims to reflect and represent the human cost of sacrifice and the impact of service on individuals. Visitors are invited to take time to reflect and contemplate, remembering those who came before us. Three walls will display photos in memory of Royal Marines.
To create this room, we are seeking images of Royal Marines who have passed away. We invite supporters to submit photos of loved ones who served in the Royal Marines and are no longer with us. This is intended to be a thoughtful space for reflection on the cost of service; this should be borne in mind when considering which images to submit. It is not intended as a traditional memorial, nor as an exhaustive list or record of Royal Marines’ casualties.
ELIGIBILITY
Images submitted should show individuals who served in the Royal Marines including the Royal Marines Band Service, and have passed away, whether in service or later.
When in service, this may include, but is not limited to, those killed in action, those who died of illness during active service, those who died in accidents during training or on operations, or those who died as a result of mental health conditions – such as, but not limited to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.
If the image is of someone who died after having left the Corps, this can relate to age, illness or those who died because of suicide, or mental health conditions - such as but not limited to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

SUBMISSION GUIDANCE
The following personnel are eligible:
- Personnel who served in any of the constituent parts of the Corps of Royal Marines from 1664 to the present day, including Commando units and the Royal Marines Band Service.
- Royal Marines personnel who served prior to Commando status, for example on sea service.
- Members of the Special Boat Service (SBS) or other Special Forces units who were Royal Marines prior to joining Special Forces.
- Recruits who have died during training prior to passing out.
This does not include Commando-trained personnel from the wider Royal Navy, the British Army or Royal Air Force. Likewise, this does not include personnel from overseas Marines Corps or units.
If in doubt contributors should research a person’s service record prior to sending an image to ensure that they are eligible.
Images should clearly show the person being commemorated.
The image can include a small number of people, for example a photo showing a unit, or when the person was deployed and is with other Royal Marines / serving personnel, or as part of the Royal Marines Band Service. It can also be a wedding photo, or with their children. The guiding principle is that it should be clear who is being commemorated.
Images should not cause offence – for example they should not include nudity or offensive slogans.
- The Museum cannot return physical images, so we are only accepting digital files.
- Images need to be of a high quality to enable visitors to see the person clearly.
- Images should be scanned at 300 DPI or 900 pixels wide and 1200 pixels high.
- Images should be either a scan or an image that was taken on a digital device, not a photograph of a photograph.
- Images will be printed at a standard size of 6 inches x 4 inches
- Images will need to be in a portrait orientation. Photos in a landscape orientation cannot be used.
Photos should be uploaded through the following link Royal Marines Experience Remembrance Room Photos – Fill in form and all fields should be completed.
Images should be titled in the following format – ‘Rank_First Name_Last Name_Submission Date’, for example ‘Marine_Joe_Bloggs_2026_02_28’.
Images will rotate over time, and the Museum reserves the right to remove or swap out images at any time.
The Museum cannot guarantee the display of any particular image.
It should not be inferred that images are of greater or lesser importance if they are or are not on display.
By sharing an image, contributors are giving permission to the Museum for an image to be displayed to the public in the museum.
Contributors should also be aware that the image, within the context of the Remembrance Room and the Royal Marines Experience, may be used in marketing or communications and in submitting the image give permission for that to take place.
