Set Sail For Story Time

Captain Compass has made a rather surprising announcement – he's decided he'd quite like to become an astronaut! The only difficulty is that he has absolutely no idea where to begin. Thankfully, with Eddison, Ratty and a team of young recruits on hand, it's time for astronaut training as everyone prepares for an unforgettable journey beyond the clouds.

Inspired by Mae Among the Stars, this uplifting storytelling adventure introduces children to the remarkable story of Mae Jemison, the first African American woman to travel into space, whose determination and love of learning turned an ambitious dream into reality. Through imaginative challenges, audience participation and playful STEM activities, children will discover that big dreams begin with curiosity, resilience and believing in themselves.

Although the Royal Navy explores the seas rather than space, both sailors and astronauts rely on many of the same skills: navigation, teamwork, engineering, observation and courage when facing the unknown. This session celebrates the spirit of exploration that connects voyages across oceans with journeys beyond Earth.

Supporting the National Year of Reading "Go All In" campaign, the session uses an inspiring true story to encourage families to read together while showing children that anyone can achieve extraordinary things.

The journey doesn't end there, as families are invited to continue their adventure at the Learning Centre in the Victory Gallery, where hands-on activities bring each story's ideas to life through real experimentation and discovery. Created through a partnership between Royal Navy Museums and TYC Arts & Education CIC, the project brings together heritage and creative education to spark STEM curiosity in young audiences.
