Set Sail For Story Time

Captain Compass is preparing for another exciting voyage—but the weather seems determined to make things difficult. One moment the sun is shining, the next the wind is howling, and before long the rain is pouring down. How can anyone set sail when the weather just can't make up its mind?

Inspired by Meet the Weather, this lively storytelling adventure invites young explorers to investigate clouds, wind, rain and sunshine through imaginative games, movement and audience participation. Alongside Captain Compass, Eddison and Ratty, children will discover how weather shapes our journeys, influences the natural world and affects life both on land and at sea.

For hundreds of years, understanding the weather has been essential for Royal Navy sailors. Reading the skies, observing the wind and recognising changing conditions helped crews plan voyages, avoid danger and navigate safely across the world's oceans. This session encourages children to become keen observers of the world around them, discovering that science can often begin simply by looking up.

Supporting the National Year of Reading "Go All In" campaign, this session combines storytelling with scientific exploration to inspire families to read, investigate and discover together.

The journey doesn't end there, as families are invited to continue their adventure at the Learning Centre in the Victory Gallery, where hands-on activities bring each story's ideas to life through real experimentation and discovery. Created through a partnership between Royal Navy Museums and TYC Arts & Education CIC, the project brings together heritage and creative education to spark STEM curiosity in young audiences.
