Set Sail for Story Time
Look up and join Augustine and Ratty on a journey into space, discovering how sailors have used the stars to navigate and find their way across the seas. Families will explore meteors, stars and the night sky through movement, imagination and playful discovery, inspiring children to be curious about the world above them.
This month’s Set Sail Programme story invites families to look beyond the horizon and discover the fascinating connection between space, stars and navigation. Inspired by Look Up, Augustine and Ratty are curious about what they can see in the night sky and need help understanding the meteors, stars and mysterious lights above them. Children will be encouraged to make predictions, join in with actions, dance, search for shooting stars and even become meteors themselves through imaginative movement.
The story provides a playful introduction to scientific curiosity and observation, while making a connection to the way sailors have looked to the stars to help navigate across the seas. Families can discover how looking carefully, asking questions and understanding the world around us can help us find our way – whether travelling across an ocean or exploring the night sky. The adventure finishes with families looking up, dreaming big and imagining where Augustine might sail next.
The story will be read at 11am, 12pm and 1pm on board HMS Trincomalee. The journey doesn’t end there, as families are invited to continue their adventure at the Trinc Cabin from 11am-2pm , where hands-on activities bring each story’s ideas to life through real experimentation and discovery. Created through a partnership between Theatre Space North East, the project brings together heritage and creative education to spark STEM curiosity in young audiences.
