Set Sail for Story Time
Join Augustine and Ratty for a hands-on adventure inspired by Rosie Revere, Engineer, as they discover that great inventions often begin with curiosity, creativity and a willingness to try again. Families will explore how engineers solve problems, adapt their ideas and invent useful solutions – just like the people who help keep Royal Navy ships moving safely at sea.
This month’s Set Sail Programme story invites families to step into the world of engineering, where mistakes are not failures but opportunities to learn. Rosie Revere’s story provides the perfect starting point for Augustine and Ratty to discover how engineers use imagination, observation and problem-solving to make things work. As the story unfolds, children will be encouraged to think like engineers, finding new uses for everyday objects, building inventions and identifying what flying machines need to get off the ground. They will consider how Rosie responds when things do not go to plan and why trying again is such an important part of creating something new.
The story will be read at 11am, 12pm and 1pm on board HMS Trincomalee. Families will finish by helping Augustine remember why engineers keep trying, while imagining useful solutions sailors might invent at sea. It’s a way to explore creativity, resilience and problem-solving.
The journey doesn’t end there, as families are invited to continue their adventure at the Trinc Cabin from 11am-2pm , where hands-on activities bring each story’s ideas to life through real experimentation and discovery. Created through a partnership between Theatre Space North East, the project brings together heritage and creative education to spark STEM curiosity in young audiences.
