Set Sail For Story Time

Captain Compass knows exactly where he wants to go—but there's one rather important problem. He has absolutely no idea how to get there! With maps scattered across the deck, a spinning compass in hand and calculations that simply don't add up, he needs the help of Eddison, Ratty and a crew of young explorers to chart the perfect course.

Inspired by Counting on Katherine, this engaging storytelling adventure introduces children to the remarkable story of Katherine Johnson, whose extraordinary mathematical talent helped make space exploration possible. Through interactive challenges, audience participation and imaginative problem-solving, families will discover how maths helps us understand the world, solve complex problems and reach incredible destinations.

For centuries, mathematics has played a vital role in Royal Navy navigation. Long before satellites and digital technology, sailors relied on calculations, charts and careful observations to safely cross oceans and explore new horizons. This session celebrates the importance of perseverance, teamwork and logical thinking, showing that every great adventure begins with careful planning.

Supporting the National Year of Reading "Go All In" campaign, this inspiring story encourages families to discover how books can open the door to remarkable people, extraordinary achievements and exciting STEM careers.

The journey doesn't end there, as families are invited to continue their adventure at the Learning Centre in Victory Gallery, where hands-on activities bring each story's ideas to life through real experimentation and discovery. Created through a partnership between Royal Navy Museums and TYC Arts & Education CIC, the project brings together heritage and creative education to spark STEM curiosity in young audiences.
